Spring basjoo rebirth in zone 5

I was worried, we got down to -22 this winter a few times. But here they come!

They are coming up slower than last year, though. I'm just happy to see them at all, though.

Wow Sandy, how exciting!!! It looks like you got lots of Mulch around it, from the trees and all. Thats the secret. This fall you can add to that mulch just for extra protection. It looks like it loves the spot its in!!! It probablly likes the moisture from the creek too. You will have to posts a pic when it gets bigger. I would love to see it in the late summer. Mine are doing good too, but they always do as I live in Zone 8a. Much milder than you have it. Way to go!!! That's something to be proud of!!! Enjoy!!!! Diana55

Wow, yours is several inches taller than mine, and mine are in zone 6/7 next to a cement south-facing wall! But I'm just glad mine made it at all; it was a weird winter weather-wise.

Well, I am official jealous! LOL

Our experimental Basjoo has not come up and it won't. I just checked it yesterday and the part of the corm that was firm, is now mushy and stinky.... it's a gonner. :(

Pots Pots Pots! that's my future! LOL

I've successfully overwinter these guys for 3 winters now and I'm just about 12kms north of Pearson Airport. I really think that if you can find a spot against a south facing wall you should have success.

Don't give up.

Well, as I've posted in my other thread, IT'S ALIVE!!!!

Yesterday when we came home we found the first sprout! I can NOT believe it. It must be because it's in an only partly sunny location. It's shaded by early PM.

Now, to see how this grows this summer. I now have much more motivation since this worked out. I may have to plant some more in other areas! LOL
