Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelli'/'Abbyssinian red': blown over?

I bought 9 small plants last year, only $5 each.

Transferred to 8-gal containers, they developed thick pseudo-stems and great foliage about 6 feet tall by October.

They stayed outside over our "winter" and all began putting out leaves again a few weeks ago.

We've had some wind recently and 4 or 5 of them have half-way broken off right at the level of the soil, below the bulge-y "abdomen". (ventri- = abdomen)

Are they naturally weak there and susceptible to wind damage, or were they weakened by rot or fungus?

If I cut them off at the ground level, will they come back?

I forgot to say that after the cool weather, I cut back the pseudo-stems to viable material, with left about 1 to 2 feet of pseudo-stem that made it through the winter.

If your Ensete still have pseudostems on them they will most likely grow back, but the ones you cut to the ground will not. The Ensete ventricosum do not naturally pup, but they can be forced to using certain methods. You may find this discussion link useful.
