Another endless basjoo question

This was the 2nd winter in the ground for my basjoo. In the fall of its first year I cut it down to about a foot and left the two small pups that had developed alone. After uncovering everything in March, it took off. The two pups grew large, as did two others. This past fall, I left the pups intact, and cut everything down almost to the ground. Well, the 4 pups are coming back just fine, but mom is shot I think. Or is she? There appears to be nodules/pups developing from the side of the mother stem above ground. Is this possible? And are these pups? Should I excise all pups now and replant? Or leave everything alone and see what happens with the growths from the side of the mother stem? Confused novice.
