Are the requirements for Ensette different from banana?

I purchased a nursery grown Ensette last year and planted in ground,full sun beginning of summer.It appeared to struggle and did not achieve much size.All my nursery grown bananas have done very well during first year of planting in ground. I left in ground this past winter and now about 2' tall. Should I be fert and watering it differently from my bananas? Part shade instead of full sun? Or does it just need more time to develope a larger root system? Any advice will be much appreciated.

I have heard these bananas are native to high elevations and so probably are not happy with hot, hot growing conditions without a LOT of moisture. They do great up here and can grow from a small plant to over 10 feet in one season. You might try a location with a bit of afternoon shade.

I transplanted it in a unwanted shady area with no attention and it appears to be thriving. Hmmmm? It will be my pot luck plant.Whatever it does, so be it.
