Banana in cages

Hello everyone;

I have a severe gopher problem so I have to plant absolutely everything in cages that are made from wire mesh. My oldest banana has already fruited and I cut it down to the rhizome. It had 2 larger pups that were half it's size, but I have not seen any additional little ones. Now that the larger one is 'gone', I'm hoping there is enough room in the cage. If anyone else has to plant this way, have you noticed a size that is best for the spreading and encouraging pups to develop?
