Wintering Banana Question

Here in SC I have been told to dig up my banana tree when it gets fall and store it under the house or in the garage. I was told that the leaves will turn brown and die but the trunk will come back when planted next year and grow taller. Have any of you did this.

Maxcat, what type of banana do you grow? What part of SC are you in? It is like real estate - location, location, location! I'm in zone 7 near Birmingham and I leave basjoo and musella lasiocarpa in the ground and they have been realiably root hardy.
