Banana gallery?

Posted by succulentfreak N. CA - Z8 (My Page) on

I am going to purchase some new bananas and would like to get a few that have variegated leaves or red in the leaves (i'm a foliage junkie). Does anyone knows of a site that has photos of different types or maybe recommend a few different types that I could look up. I googled it but many sites show the blossom...I want to see leaves. Thanks! Amy

Zebrina is a good one, it has inedible fruit, though. My personal favorite has been the sumatrana X gran nain cross. Good fruit, pretty leaves. There's also the Bordelon, it has pretty leaves with red undersides. I sell bananas at my greenhouse, e-mail me for pictures. These are three that I carry.

RE: Banana gallery?

Red undersides would be Red Iholena, Rojo, and Sumatrana X. Other reds (tall and dwarf) tend to have most of the color in the trunk, stems and ribs.

Dwarf Colorado Blanco, Dwarf Orinocco and Green Red also have some highlights.

A chini champa, with a dark pseudostem and a red edge would also be a good choice. Also the striped Sikkimensis, Dark green with maroon spots on the leaves ans a red underside is very nice to look at and very wind resistant.
