That is fine. Just cut the top hand off the stalk when it is ripe. No need to rehang.

That is how we hung our first ones when we just moved here. But then the locals laughed and rehung them the other way. They said it was so the ripe bananas don't fall off as easily.

I don't think it matters either way, the oldest hands will always ripen first. And over ripe bananas fall off either end!

Actually, now we just cut the bunch up into hands after we cut them from the plant. Some we keep in the light (not sun) to ripen and store some in a cool dark place, to slow the ripening. They all taste good when ripe.
