Musa are Silicon Accumulators

I just read that banana plants are more than 1% silicon by dry weight. This suggests that supplemental feeding of potassium silicate might be beneficial, especially in potted plants. It may even influence cold hardiness.

I previously experimented with canna (a banana relative). Given enough potassium silicate, you can actually see an insoluble silicate excretion on the leaves. It's probably a good insect deterrent.
