Separating pups in the ground

Hi. My basjoo, planted outside, is still a youngster and around 4 foot tall. It has several pups that are now around a foot tall. I'd like to take off one of the pups as insurance in case the mother plant doesn't make it through the winter, for whatever reason. I've separated pups of pot-grown bananas before with no problems, but I've never done it to one that's in the ground. With pot-grown ones, I like to remove some compost first and prise apart some of the tangled up roots, so that the pup has as many of its own roots intact as possible, before slicing through the corm. Obviously I won't be able to do this quite so easily in the ground - any advice, please?

Thanks.
