I grew it in a really cold zone 8, possibly a zone 7 microclimate. I had a few very large ones that I kept in pots(15 gallon), inside in an unheated greenhouse. They looked fine, just had the leaves frozen, with a firm trunk, but come spring I found out that the inside of the pseudostem had rotted, with the outside looking fine. I also had a large M.cheesmanii do that. These were grown from seed, but there seems to be two different types of M.balbisiana available from seed, and I only tried the one. I wouldn't bother with balbisiana in that zone, but something like Musa 'Daj Giant' would be worth it and it appears that it's most likely a sikkimensis X balbisiana hybrid judging from leaf characteristics, and wax. It's a keeper for sure.
