How do you determine what kind of banana plant you have? What characteristics should I look for?

Its easiest to tell when they fruit. Look at the flower, fruiting height, fruit size shape etc.. Link below to Id forum at Bananas.org

OK Thank you. These have never fruited. I've had them for a few years. The first one came from my Dad. His have fruited before, so I hope these will eventually. They are pretty prolific. I started with 3 and now have about 16. I need to spread them out and create a grove.
