I recently separated a golden lotus-one is doing OK but the other I think I planted too deep and shows signs of rotting at the base and a little up the side. It feels real loose like I could almost pull it right out. I could scoop out the top layer of dirt and just leave it alone or should I do something else?

If it is planted too deep, I woul remove some soil. More importantly, remove ALL rotted portions. Rot spreads by contact, so must be removed as often as it re-occurs. Maybe cut back on water a little too.
