I've got chinese yellow and it does good in the summer, but I've never chanced it outdoors. I might next year though since I have lots of them right now. I would definitely mulch them like a basjoo if I tried it though.
I also don't think it's fair that you live in Michigan and you're a zone 6 and we're south of you and in a 5A. Boo hoo...

I know, that does seem kind of backwards. We stay warmer in the winter, but you probably get a little warmer in the summer. The lakes really benefit us. The weird thing is, Traverse City is at least 6 hours north of us (I think about 350 miles?), located in the far northern portion of the lower peninsula, yet they're still considered a zone 6. We're in extreme Southeast Michigan, close to Ohio border. Zone 6 stretches up and down the east and west coasts of Michigan, but if you go inland toward the center of the lower peninsula, you start getting into zone 5 and even 4.

I split a bunch of Chinese Yellow banana last year, left a small bunch in the ground and brought a larger bunch inside to overwinter in my basement. The ones outside did survive, with heavy mulch and a trash bag over them to keep out the moisture. I live in a zone 6 - just south of Kansas City MO. Our low last year was right around 0F , a couple of times. Good luck. The best thing to do is experiment, leave some outside and bring some inside to overwinter. Always have a backup plan.
