What zone are you in? I hear they don't bareroot well.

I'm in zone 6. I've been keeping them outdoors for winters, but I'm moving, so I've dig some up for people and 1 for myself. I also have to dig up an Abyssinian Red. I was just going to bare root that one. Any ideas for the best way to overwinter that one.

Option 2 is your best bet. Bananas store energy in the corm for winter hibernation. When you separate bananas, you have to get a piece of the corm for the pup to be viable. With this being said, separate the pups, pot em and give them away. Then with the plant you have left, put it in a pot w/ soil. It can be rather rudimentary as it may be planted again next spring so you don't have to get fancy. Store the pot for winter. The more light and warmth you give your banana over the winter, the more you want to water it. Just be sure never to over water as you do in the summer. The corm tends to rot if watered too much in winter, as they aren't as vigorous growers.

I also am new to growing Banana plants and have 3 to over winter. I was going to over winter in a cool but frost free greenhouse. I am on pure sand and am wondering if putting them in the greenhouse border rather than pots is the best option ?
