small 1/4' worms underground ?

wondering what these are? they are 1/4 " long and white and seem to live underground and feed off the dieing or dead leafs of the banana plants. plants seem to do very well and have had most of them for years now. are they harmful or what should be done about this. they are all in the ground not pots.
