I think the best choice is the Chinese Yellow Banana(Musella lasiocarpa). I have two plants. One in full sun the other about half to three quarter day sun. I just went out to measure my sun plant and it is exactly 6' to the tip of the tallest leaf and is a bit over 9' wide. There is no concern of winter hardiness for this one in your area. The size may be more than you can spare, but I think it is most likely(unless there is something new) the shortest of the hardy bananas. Hmmm, how much is fairly shady? Is it morning or afternoon shade? The more sun this plant gets the better. My shadier plant leans towards the light so I can only assume it wants more than it gets. If plant relationships haven't been realigned I believe that cannas and bananas still belong to the same order, Zingiberales. My info is pretty old, so it is possible they have been reclassified. Even if it has changed, at least they were once thought to be somewhat closely related.

Susan51, this little plant is supposed to be pretty hardy, listed by some authorities to zone 7. My winters have not been very challenging lately, so its not had a lot of cold here. The lowest temps I've had since planting it are 16F(04/05) and 22F(05/06). I'd definitely try it if I were you. Wait till spring to plant.

My spot is quite shady... dappled shade by an oak all day then it gets about two hours of late afternoon/early evening sun.
