I have a chiminea that I burn all fall, and winter. I have used the ashes on my bananas for a year and my bananas (around 30 plants and 7 varieties) grow phenomenally well and fruit like mad.

Is there a known down side to ash use on bananas or other fruiting plants?

BTW, I supplement the ash with a balanced fertilizer over the summer months also.
