need advice- Chinese Yellow

Hi-
I've learned that my Chinese Yellow is hardy in my zone 7b- it's out in the open- should I cover it or anything? I just got it this year as a pup- it's now about 3X3' with pups of it's own. The first frost damaged some of the leaves.. any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I've heard many people claim that this banana is quite hardy for them but I've never been able to get one through the winter. My winters are quite wet and the plants have just rotted.

If your winters aren't too harsh you could probably just cover them with a good layer of mulch. If you are expecting real cold many people make a cage around the trimmed stem/trunk and fill it with straw or leaves. Some even cover the cage with a tarp.

Or you can dig up the corm and store in the basement. Think potato storage conditions. Seems to work for me.

Here is a link that might be useful: Banana website

I would play it safe and mulch it with about a foot of mulch followed by a tarp to keep moisture from coming in. The mulch has to be very dry, and hay would probably work too (and thats very plentyful in the center of the country or in more rural areas).

As far as I know these bananas are cold hardy to a zone 7b, but they arent very easy to find and are very nice so I wouldnt risk giving it the full effects of a zone 7 winter and I would protect it.

Good luck
