Musa Ensete Nana questions

Hi everyone,

I have a banana plant that I grew from seed - Thompson's if I remember correctly, and the packet stated that it was a Musa Ensete Nana. Since first peeking out of the ground (May 29) and today, it has grown to nearly 5 feet and I'm rather pleased with it. I do have a few concerns/questions about it though, and I hope the experts on this forum will help me.

It's been growing new leaves, each longer and wider than the one before, but it also seems to be losing leaves just as quickly - the whole stem just abruptly folds down and eventually breaks (I've lost 5 leaves so far) Is this normal, or is there something wrong with the care I've been giving it ? It sits in front of a south window, but the light it receives is shaded by a blind.

The color of the leaves is also quite different than all the pictures I've seen - I expected a dark green color but all my leaves (the whole plant, really) is a very bright, light green. Too much or not enough light ?

Lastly, I've read and seen of people who cut down their banana plant completely comes fall; if mine goes on losing leaves as it's doing now, I'm considering doing the same. Would that be a good or bad idea, and would it then grow some "pups" come spring ?

Thanks for your patience reading my long post !

RE: Musa Ensete Nana questions

It is normal for banana plants to lose leave like that nothing unusual. I am not familiar with Musa Ensete, normally they are eithere Musa which produce pups/suckers or ensete which do not and produce only from seed. Therefore I would not cut it until I know for sure it will come back.
You might try bananas.org where a lot of my questions get answered.

RE: Musa Ensete Nana questions

Musa Ensete is an old name for Ensete Ventricosum. I wouldn't be worried about it losing leaves, unless it's losing leaves faster than it's growing them - which is possible in winter when growth will be slow, but it will pick up fine by summer. I the leaf colour is not unusual; they're not particularly dark-leaved, though if it's very pale it might be a symptom of low light. It would definitely appreciate a sunny spot outdoors in summer if you haven't been doing this already.

Bananas are cut down in autumn so that they can be protected from frost/wind with mulch etc., so there's no reason to do it indoors. Ensete especially don't really like it as they don't have the same kind of tall pseudostem as Musa species.

HTH,

Alex
