Dwarf Red Banana Overwinter

This Spring I purchased my first banana plant -a dwarf red banana. I planted it in a large container about 24" round and 24" high. It has done well and is now about 3' high.

I'm wondering what to do with it this winter? I live in North Texas and get about 14 freezing nights a winter with the very lowest temp being about 15-20. With all my other tropicals, I bring them in on cold nights and put them out the rest of the time.

I can't possibly move this large pot around. I was wondering if I should repot the plant into something smaller for the winter or if putting on the sheltered porch might be OK? My other option would be to try and build it a shelter for those cold nights.

What would be best?

Carolyn

RE: Dwarf Red Banana Overwinter

I am wondering the same thing! I hear, so far, that they can not take too many days at all below 45ish. For now, until I hear a better plan, I am going to move it to a non-windy spot in the basement for the Winter. I'm just afraid with it not getting any light in there that it will die. :( I really don't know what to do.
