Overwintering Banana

I did a dumb thing and planted my six-year old banana in the garden this summer. I say dumb, because now I have to dig it up. It grew to 5-1/2 feet, with a "pup" the same height and another, small 12 inch pup.

Reading through recent posts, I see bananas have corms at the base, and I'm wondering if perhaps it will be easier to dig up than I think (i.e. not a huge, deep root system). If not, any advice about separating the smaller pup from the mother?

Barring repotting it, any ideas on leaving it outside over the winter (with plenty of mulch)? I'm in a cold Zone 5 in CT and it's in the middle of my vegetable garden, not very sheltered.

Thanks.

Cathy
