The pups will not make it in the ground in your Zone. Bring them inside if you want to save them "for sure". You will most likely get double the number of "pups" popping up the next growing season from the mother plant(s),.... at least I did.

No, I would not cut them off now. Disturbing the root-mass now by cutting off plants and roots will make the wounded mother-plant less able to overwinter. If the pups do die, many will probably appear next spring.
The plant will also grow faster next year, since it now has a pretty established root-system.

It is good to keep a pup indoors, or at least dormant in a garage, as insurance.
However, I do see mrbungalow's point; it could be risky to take a pup this late. I have personally not tried it (although I have done it with my potted plants, with mixed success).

I will wait till next spring when the pups reach about 2 feet - then I will transplant.

why nuot dig them all up, no roots are needed cut the the main trunk to 4'. store in dark dry place above 50 f., when you replant they will grow alot sooner than if left in the ground.

banan-grower, above 50.f? more confusion! I read that 55-60.f is too warm. to keep them real cool , but above freezing. this is my first year storing a couple of basjoos that got here to late to plant outide. you store above 50.f with success?
