Banana Blossom?

Hello,

I bought a banana plant about 7 years ago. Since then it has produced many pups. One of them has what looks to be a banana blossom. I live in Illinois, and it's about time for me to store them for the winter. I have been waiting for my banana plants to bloom, and I just wish this would have happened earlier this summer! I'm not sure what kind of banana plants I have. Here is a photo of them, and one of what appears to be a bloom:

My hope is that I will be able to keep the blooming plant in a pot in a stairwell so it will have room. I was wondering if I can cut some of the leaves so it will fit better, or would that be too much of a shock for the plant. If not, I'm hoping that a local college may have room in its conservatory for it! I'm really excited about this new development, and if anyone has any tips or suggestions, I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance!
