I have a dwarf orinoco and that looks VERY similar. As far as moving it and cutting off leaves, I don't have experience with that, but I would guess that it wouldn't hurt the plant if you cut off a few leaves. As long as you keep it from freezing and get it back outside in the spring when the danger of frost has past, you should be fine. I would say that in 6 months, give or take a few the bananas should be ripe enough to eat.

Why do the bananas fall off the flower when the leaves open up and how do I prevent this?

I agree with Guy,..looks a lot like Orinoco. I am in zone 9 so I do not have any experience in moving Banana plants indoors for the winter. My Orinoco also bloomed this summer in August. The only hand that stayed on the bloom was the first hand (6 little nanners). Although the bloom kept flowering only the first hand remained & matured. I wish I knew what I could have done to help more of the hand/bunches stay & mature. Great pic's. Thanks & good luck.

My banana plant made it through the winter and is doing well! I have about 16 bananas now (in Illinois!). My plant kept blooming throughout the winter and continued after I planted it in my yard this spring. However, I only got bananas from the first sections. Now, though the bananas are getting larger (about 4-5 inches and are still green), a few are getting rough black areas on the outside. I wonder what this is, and when should I pick them? Thanks in advance for your help. It's a dream come true to finally have bananas :)
