| Hello,
I bought a banana plant about 7 years ago. Since then it has produced many pups. One of them has what looks to be a banana blossom. I live in Illinois, and it's about time for me to store them for the winter. I have been waiting for my banana plants to bloom, and I just wish this would have happened earlier this summer! I'm not sure what kind of banana plants I have. I was wondering if I can cut some of the leaves so it will fit better, or would that be too much of a shock for the plant. If not, I'm hoping that a local college may have room in its conservatory for it! I'm really excited about this new development, and if anyone has any tips or suggestions, I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance! |

| I have a dwarf orinoco and that looks VERY similar. As far as moving it and cutting off leaves, I don't have experience with that, but I would guess that it wouldn't hurt the plant if you cut off a few leaves. As long as you keep it from freezing and get it back outside in the spring when the danger of frost has past, you should be fine. I would say that in 6 months, give or take a few the bananas should be ripe enough to eat. |

| I agree with Guy,..looks a lot like Orinoco. I am in zone 9 so I do not have any experience in moving Banana plants indoors for the winter. My Orinoco also bloomed this summer in August. The only hand that stayed on the bloom was the first hand (6 little nanners). Although the bloom kept flowering only the first hand remained & matured. I wish I knew what I could have done to help more of the hand/bunches stay & mature. Great pic's. Thanks & good luck. - Gulfcoast |

| My banana plant made it through the winter and is doing well! I have about 16 bananas now (in Illinois!). My plant kept blooming throughout the winter and continued after I planted it in my yard this spring. However, I only got bananas from the first sections. Now, though the bananas are getting larger (about 4-5 inches and are still green), a few are getting rough black areas on the outside. I wonder what this is, and when should I pick them? Thanks in advance for your help. It's a dream come true to finally have bananas :) |
