| Ok, let's say I'm going to move soon, and I have a 15' banana tree in a pot. The pot's got wheels.. Actually it's a 55 gallon plastic barrel cut in 1/2.
Problem is how the heck to move a 15' banana tree 800 miles? I thought of just taking a knife & topping it.. Hoping the leaves will regrow at the new house, but I don't want to kill the thing.
If all else fails, there's several pups who will make the trip forsure, but I'd *really* like to have the parent, as it's prolly going to be big enough to flower soon.
Thanks- |

| 15 feet in a pot? Wow! Where are you moving to? Will you be able to put it in the ground when you arrive? The really tough part is going to be traveling closed up in a truck. If it's hot, the plant may be severely damaged. I moved 1000 miles once and the plants I put in the moving truck were cooked when I got there. |

| Also something to consider, if you cut the stems for ease of moving, you start back over in terms of flowering. If you have 15' plants now that probably means you will waste a year or more of growth the plant has put in trying to bloom. |

| I'm going south somewhere.. Coastal.. Um.. Santa Barbara tops the list at the moment, but more searching needs to be done. It probabky won't go in the ground right away- I'd like to live there (wherever there is) for a bit before I buy, just so I don't get suprised after locking myself in. Good to know topping it won't kill it.. And if it gets set back a year, that's alright. Better that than leaving it here. Thanks- |

FYI - "IF" your 15' pseudostem is mature AND has already started sending up a flower bud on a true stem inside the pseudostem, ------ AND you cut below the bud ----- the pseudostem WILL NOT come back. If this happens, you will still get more pups. If you cut above the bud, it will grow out. You have no way of knowing if a bud has started, or how high it might be, unless you cut open the pseudostem and look for a bud with tiny flowers already formed inside. If you do not find a bud, the pseudostem will come back. Good luck! |

| Get a pickup. Take the tree and lay it on it's side (on the driveway, where you can roll it), wrap the trunk and leaves in a blanket or plastic (the leaves will all scrunch together if you do it right - sort of work your way around radially). Get a length of pipe (10' emt, 3/4" dia will be great) and duct tape it to the outside of your bundled tree (this prevents folding/bending). Put the rootball and pot in the the front of the bed, and let the rest hang out. With the tail gate up, pad under the trunk. Prop the pot up an somewhat of an angle by putting 25# sacks of tertilizer under the top end (they are like big bean bags, and you can use the fertilizer later). Tie it down securely to avoid rolling side to side. I have done it more than once (though not more that 60 miles - once with a 14' in a Honda Civic) and it will arrive in near new condition, as long as it is wrapped so it doesn't get shredded in the wind. |
