Bananas are not fond of shade, for starters.

hi ronda. in your zone, you need to take it inside the house. otherwise, they are planted after the last frost, as an ornamental. the first freeze will damage your leaves,which will not recover. the plant will die back in a hard freeze, and kill the plant if temps maintain at 20 degrees. you can cut off suckers and start new plants. pots are easiest for you if you just like the foliage, but they will not fruit in pots. this is just general info. hope this helps some...

Why don't you get some Musa basjoo bananas (Japanese hardy variety into zone 7 with some protection). Also try the hardy Chinese banana (Musella lasiocarpus)--said to be hardy to 0-5 F. The Chinese variety has pretty yellow blossoms that last a long time and it's a productive clump forming variety that produces lots and lots of side shoots.
I also like the Himalayan banana (mine flowered and even started to produce some fruit before the frost hit it). Have doubts that the Himalayan would overwinter in your zone without more aggressive protection (so just cut back, and bring into a frostproof area till spring). Bananas will grow with partial shade but not do very much in a really shady location. Good luck!

Would Musa itinerans/yunnan be a candidate? I've read on this forum that they can take more shade than most.

And I'm not so sure you would need to dig up M. sikkimensis for winter, and certainly not M. basjoo.
