Is potting a banana good in the winter ?

The reason i ask this my friend digs his orrinocos up every year and pots them. His banana fruited this year in august

it was about 15 ft tall but the thing is his bananas were real tiny and not filled out.. I have heard its better to dig them up and let them go dormant because it doesn't stress the plant.. they will start right back were they left off when you put them in the ground again. Has anyone ever experienced this?
