Shallow Super Sizes

I'm another novice hoping to get started with beekeeping next spring, and am hoping someone can give me some advice on which supers to choose. Is there a significant weight difference between a full 6 5/8" shallow and a 5 11/16" shallow? Is it enough to make up for the likely additional cost of installing an extra super (or is that even likely to be needed?) The weight is my biggest concern -- retirement and a move to southern Virginia are the events allowing me to start keeping bees, and this old girl isn't quite what she used to be!

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Lost, A full medium super 6 5/8 can weigh around 55 lbs
A full shallow, about 40 lbs, so there is quite a difference. Another option if you don't already have equipment is go with an 8 frame hive, which would cut the weight per super down even more. The frames of foundation that go into the hive are the same frames you would use in the typical 10 frame hive.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. That's really good information, and makes the choice a no-brainer -- it's shallow supers and an 8-frame set-up for me!

Now for the really dumb question -- is there any reason not to attach a good solid handle over the finger groove when I'm assembling the boxes, so that you can grab the handle in your palm with fingers in the groove for extra lifting help, and possibly added carrying stability? I haven't seen this addressed anywhere in my reading.

Thanks again

Pat

Oh those shallow supers are a blessing!!. I'm 70 and believe me the weight difference helps a lot.The only problem with handles on the out side they will take more room to store. But if you only have a few it's not that important.Good luck with your bees.
