Bee undertakings

This Fall I 'inherited' two hives with the property i bought, and have been trying to learn as much as i can about them before i take over their care in the spring.

I'm concerned that i might have a problem already with this freakishly warm weather...my bees have been out flying around quite a bit, and there's a huge pile of dead bees under each entrance.Spring cleaning in January??

Is such unseasonable weather stressful on the hive? The felow i got them from is a prize-winning beekeeper, so i know they started off healthy and well-stocked, i'm just worried they might run out of food when they're so active, or lose too many workers now that the weather's freezing again.

Any comments?

RE: Bee undertakings

Hello instar, The most traumatic situation you will ever find yourself in is trying to clean out a starved hive while kicking your own backside because you know that you could have prevented it. So lets check them and feed them if neccessary. if you lift thte inner cover and find that the bees are clustered right at the top, they need feeding.

There aree many styles of feeders, entrance feeders will freeze.all involve mixing sugar syrup and gettng it into the hive. OR TAKE A 5 LB. BAG OF SUGAR AND SPREAD IT ON TOP OF THEE INNER COVER AND REPLACE THE LID. Check them again in a couple of weeks
