Anyone Using Top Bar Hives?

| Are any of you folks using top bar hives (vs. Langstroth?)? I plan to start beekeeping this spring and am very intrigued by the top bar hive option and organic methods--wonder if this is a good topic of discussion for this list.
If so...what have your experiences w/ TBH been? Do you recommend this method for a beginner? I'm planning to have just 2 hives and was thinking of one Langstroth hive and one top bar hive. |

| I've used TBHs and think they're a good way to go for someone that will only have a hive or two. You can take a look at the photo section in my yahoo profile to get an idea. They make for a very inexpensive way to get started in beekeeping and if you're willing to take cut comb (and/or crush the comb for liquid) honey, then you have virtually no processing equipment costs to incur. You have to be careful getting started along this line but it's definitely a workable solution for a small scale hobbyist beekeeper. Try searching the TBH archives at beesource - dot - com for a really full discussion of this topic. |
