Moving a bee colony.

First off, I have a colony that has been in a tree for probably over 4-5 years already. Problem is the tree is very close to ready to fall from rot at this point.

I want the colony, they seem very docile, I've been outside when they just seem to swarm for no apparent reason and they've never paid any attention to me.

Anyway, I thought I would peruse this forum for any ideas, as I was wondering if I could contact a local beekeeper for help. Then I read the posting about needing a permit (I'm in Florida). Well they set up house all on their own, but if I purposely moved them would I then be considered a "beekeeper" and need a permit?

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

RE: Moving a bee colony.

To get the bees out suggesfully, the tree should be cut and opened to get the bees and comb out of there.
As for hiving them....your best bet would be like you said, contact a local bee keeper and see if he or she is interested?
Perhaps you can cut the tree yourself or have an arborist doing it?... [save]
As for keeping it, ...you would have to take up bee keeping....if that's what you would like?
Study, read allot, join a local bee club....there are a few things you need to know before hand.
