Not bees but Hornets or Wasps

Does anyone know if hornets hibernate in their nests? My friend cut a nest out of her shrubbery (it had been there through a very cold winter -30/-40. Now she wants to take it a science class but we are scared that there could be sleeping hornets in it. I would appreciate any information one might have.

Depending on your zone, you can expect only a queen to winter over. You don't list your zone, but apparently you list a Canadian Postal Code.

Presuming this is a paper nest, there is likely only a single, potentially angry queen. This is what I did: Put the paper next in a plastic bag before bringing indoors and use a non metallic twist tie, and pop it in the microwave for a minute or less, and it would surely kill the queen.

A good freeze will kill em. I've captured hundreds of hornet nests for medical use. The queens don't winter over in the nest anyway. And at -40 deg I'm confident they are all quite dead.
