How often to feed new colony
| | |
Posted by esperanza z8b CA (My Page) on Tue, Apr 8, 08 at 0:21
I just transfered a swarm from a nuc box given to me to a new hive. I placed a top feeder directly on top of the hive body, then put the inner cover, then put the out cover.
- Does the inner cover need to go directly on the hive body instead?
- How often do I need to place sugar syrup in the top feeder?
- What time of day is best to do this?
- Do I need to use the smoker each time I refill the syrup?
Thank you,

| esperanza,The hive top feeders I've see go on the hive body, then you put an empty super over it with the covers on top of the empty.I've never actually used the hive top feeders( I get buckets for free and make my own), so setup may depend on the style of feeder. Some are enclosed so you can fill without having the bees buzzing you. You can feed till there's a nectar flow. If they're on new foundation, they'll need the syrup to help draw out the comb if there isn't any nectar available. |
