miner bees

Hey Folks,
This spring my yard has been filled with miner bees, or something like them. Since they seem to be harmless and beneficial I figured that I would leave them alone. But they are dead smack in the middle of my lawn. When I start mowing: will both (either) of us survive? I have a 2 acre yard so I can keep the kids away from that area, but I do need to mow it.

The good thing here is: Their stinger cannot penetrate human skin. And, really unless they actually get caught in the blades of your mower, they should be fine. Actually the more traffic in the area, the more used to it they will be. I would send my kids to play on top of the nest, but walking through there shouldn't be a big deal.

Now, if you were mowing over yellowjackets. . .

RE: miner bees

I agree...yellow jackets are another story ;) Also certain honeybees don't like lawn equipment either (especially gas powered). But I had one of the kids who does my lawn use a gas-powered tiller in my backyard the other day just a few feet away from my solitary bee apiary and both parties had a grand ol' time with no incident. So solitary bees really work fine with machinery (which is one of their selling points).

Cheers.
