Bee swarm in my backyard

Posted by happyintexas z7 TX (My Page) on

On my morning walk around the yard (one acre) I came across a large clump of bees hanging from a shrub branch--about six inches off the ground. The clump is about the size of two quart jars smooshed together. It was cool this morning, so there isn't a lot of activity.

I have many roses in bloom right now and want bees to visit the yard.

Are these guys just resting like the monarchs did last fall? Are they house hunting?

Give me a quick education please. My son's playing a double header baseball game today and I don't have time to do much research.

Thanks!

Yes, they're house hunting. If you leave them alone, they will be gone before too long (a matter of hours to a couple of days at most). What you have is a swarm of bees that are looking to establish a new permanent colony (hopefully, not in the eave/roof of your house).

Alternatively, you could capture this swarm and have your own private source of raw/natural honey (and pollinators for your garden). But this is an undertaking not to be taken lightly.

If you're interested in keeping them, see if there is a local beekeeper nearby who would be willing to hive them for you, or take them away. It's sometimes a fairly easy job, but you should have the usual protective clothing and some experience. Many times it amounts to placing a hive box underneath and shaking the swarm in but it's not always that easy.

Thanks for the info. After a couple of days, they left. I wish I knew where they went.

Bee Keeping sounds like a hobby I'll need to research in a year or two. Very intriguing. Too busy homeschooling right now. But I really enjoyed the little buzzy bodies seeking rest and sanctuary in my little part of the world.

Thank you for responding.

I followed the advice of some people on this site, and I shot holes in the nest with my shotgun. This did not work. It just made my neighbours and the bees angry.

Eventually somebody called he police because of all the shooting. After explaining my situation to the police, they begn firing their hand guns at the nest, but it did not work. The bees just attacked us and covered us in bee stings.

I think the best way to get rid of bees is to use a baseball bat and smash the nest so that you can be sure that it is destroyed. You may get a few bites, but nobody will be annoyed by all the shooting, and the police wont have to be called.
