I am a fourth generation beekeeper and I can say I have never seen or know of a honeybee with a red dot on its head. I would guess it is not a honeybee but I could be wrong. I would really like to see a picture if it is possible.

Could it be a varroa mite?

It could be but I have never seen a mite on a bees head and I have seen some seriously infested bees. I would think if it was on her head she could pull it off that's why mites get where the bee can't reach. Could it have been red pollen? I have seen bees with yellow or white faces from pollen while working flowers but it was not really a distinctive dot? I wish I could have seen it.
