bad smell from hives

Posted by plants4chris (My Page) on

I have no experience at all with bee hives. A friend recently told me that she had visited some people who kept bees and there was a horrible smell around the hives. I've searched the web and asked anyone I thought might know anything about this. But neither she nor I can find any answer as to why this might be. Honey and beeswax smell wonderful! I can't imagine why bee hives would smell bad. Can anyone help me out with some info?
Thanks very much,
Chris

RE: bad smell from hives

plants4chris, the only thing i can think of is that the bees have died. wax worms have took over and thats the end of it. in the fall of the year when the bees are working sumac you will have a bad smell from the nectar, which clearsup when itis ripened.also if the hive has foulbrood disease you will get a foul odor. check the comb,if the cells in the comb are sunken in examine futher. the bee grub will be a dark color and not white. hope this helps. dannybee
