Building native bee houses (for mason bees)

javan

My wife and I have been attempting to encourage the native solitary bee population for several years. Last year's block of drilled wood had 19 mudded in holes over the winter and they all opened up this spring.
We decided to build another set of bee housing (our bee hotel). Here is a photo of my wife drilling the 5/16 inch holes for the bee hotel.Click photo to enlarge and get taken to photobucket.

We mounted the two bee hotels on a structure we made (we try to use nothing but recycled and re-used materials for garden projects). Here is a picture of the short block and cover with bee attractant added.

Finally, here is the finished product with the proud creator. Hotel is open for business!
