when to clean the brood chamber?

Got a question for you bee experts. Last time I cracked open the lid of my hives, I saw earwigs under the top. I got to worrying whether there were earwigs down below, and whether it would be a good idea to pull off the supers and maybe clean out the brood chamber, even replace the box (which looks dirty on the outside where the bees land just before entering the hive). Are there pros and cons to this? I read somewhere that professional beekeepers pull apart their hives in the spring to inspect them, clean them out and such. Is this a common practice or is it better to leave well-enough alone? Under what circumstances should a beekeeper clean up the bottom brood chamber?
