Help!!

I'm a handyman in Oregon. My wife gave me the "Barefoot Beekeeper" for my birthday, along with instructions for building a top bar hive, which I built. Today, I was asked to go "deal with a bunch of bees". When I arrived, there was a swarm two feet back in an old dryer vent ten feet off the ground. The only way to get them out was to remove the comb with a trenching shovel, and then suck them out with a shop vac. I got most of them and brought them home and put them in the top bar hive, but I think I damaged them pretty badly in the process. Has anyone out there had luck removing bees with a shop vac? Any clues what I should be doing to help them survive? I'm pretty new at beekeeping, but I really want to make this work. Help!!!
