unidentified insect

I hope that you can help me; i was not quite sure where to post this...
There is a skylight on my porch roof that has always collected a vast assortment of bugs and things - mostly horse flies and house flies and the occasional butterfly that i save. Today i noticed what i thought was a bumble bee. I grabbed my fish net and my chair to get it out and i noticed that it didn't look exactly like a bumble bee. I am sorry i am unable to provide pictures. It has three very very distinct body segments, the head black, the middle yellow and the abdomen black. Its feet split into two little parts like a very wide V and there is also a V shape at the end of it's head. I can't tell if these are part of its mouth or what. I'm pretty sure they're not antennae I cannot get close enough to see much more. I hope someone can help.
I will check back here as soon as i get a chance. I hope i got all the bug vocabulary right. :) Thank you.

RE: unidentified insect

It's probably a Carpenter Bee, many times mistaken for a Bumble Bee.

That crossed my mind. I thought they were smaller though.
This guy was over an inch long...
Thank you!
