I'm thinking of getting an extractor. I have only one have and plan never to have more than two.

Question: Are those cheap extractors ($125 or so) any good? I don't mind working a little harder if the small kinds are just unweildly or if it takes a bit longer extract, etc. But if they fall apart after a year, then I'm not as excited about the whole thing.

What would you recommend for a small-time beekeeper? Can I get by with the cheapest extractor

I have usually under 5 hives, I bought a used $100.00 2 frame [swing frame for other side] extractor with some good bee equipment, I'm very pleased I did, a solid build unit.
Cheap new is usually always cheap...I would check used first,
allot of beekeepers go big and buying new larger extractors.

If your handy there are plans on the internet for making your own. I found a set of plans and for around 25$ I made my own.It even hooks up to an 1/2 drill, Now if I only had some honey to extract!!!
