Bees in FL

So after much ado, I am finally gonna get a beehive.
I went to the local bee keeper meeting a couple of weeks ago and have been invited to visit a local keeper's garden this weekend.
I hope to start getting equipment in the next couple of weeks.

We have 2.5 acres but are gonna start out with just 1 hive at first to see how it goes.
There are 6 fruit tree nurseries within 1.5 miles of our property so it will hopefully keep the bees well stocked.

I should introduce myself huh :)
I posted once before but it was a while back.
My name is Erika, I live in south Fl.
My family and I live on 2.5 acres in basically the last agricultural neighborhood in the middle of the city.
We are trying to turn our property into a self sustained haven, I have chickens and guineas (I know I will have to keep them away from the hive), we have a large vegetable garden and over a dozen different fruit trees.
We are also creating a mini frangipani nursery.
My goal is to basically have very little grass left :).

Well, that's great news. I am also just getting started. Have gone to a few meetings, visited with a few beekeepers. I've started to build a Top Bar Hive. I'll be getting my bees in the spring, I don't think they would make it through the winter in NC if I got them now. I still need to prepare my chosen site and purchase a few items. Good luck!

Erika, Welcome again. I remember you posted back in the spring and somehow we got your name mixed up. I'm glad to see you are actually taking the plunge. I planned on starting with 2 hives and ended up with 5 the first year. My goal for this year was ten hives and I have eleven. Let's see, if I double every year for the next 5 years that would be...352. I think I'd better slow down. Beekeepers are a great bunch of people and I know you'll get the support and encouragement you need. Good luck and keep us all posted. Tony

RE: Bees in FL

I posted on the Florida forum but anyone who wants to take for free a bee hive out of a dead branch of a tree for the hives and bees is welcome to contact me. The bees are very docile, not aggressive. I live in Central Florida in the Lakeland area.
