Try doing a search on this forum (which is actually about bees, not pests - there is a "pest" forum on Gardenweb, so check there too).

Personally, I've never had any problems with bees that had nests on the house. I always kept a safe distance and we left each other alone. I don't think the bees in the peak of your house will bother you, although I have seen some nests that were huge. I've had bees in the ground sting me when I ran over their nest. The wasps that build on open combs used to make me a little nervous when I went in the shed since it was small and they were only a few feet away. They would turn to keep an eye on me but never flew at me. The other day I wanted to get a couple of supers that were on the roof of my shed with an inner cover on top. I grabbed inside the cover and put my hand right on a wasp nest. About a half dozen flew out and were flying around wondering what disturbed them. I stood still then took a few steps back and they were fine. Later when I was working my hives and had my veil on, I brought over an old deep body in rough shape and picked up the cover with the nest and moved it on top of the deep so I could get the supers. Only one bee flew around. The rest remained on the nest. Maybe someone who Has had problems will post and give another opinion. Tony

They're too far away to pose a problem.

Beyond that, they have an annual life cycle. That is, the colony dies at the end of the year -- in my region, that's usually mid-December -- after which time you can safely remove the nest. The mated queens overwinter elsewhere and will start their nests in other places.
