Mulitple swarms

| I'm new to bee keeping and I've had five swarms occur this year from my two bee hives. Is it common, I just got my last swarm on 7/14/06. I live in the Norther CA mountians with the closest neighbor being eight miles away. The bees seem to have plenty of nectar sources, water from a stream, and there aren't any pest that I can find in the hive. They're protected from animals invading the area. I've caught three of the swarms but I don't care to have more that a total of 4 hives since it's only a hobby. I'd be greatful for any advice.
Thanks, Joe

| I'm a complete newbie to beekeeping, but I too keep getting swarms on our property, so I'm learning fast. We just got another one, which set up residence in the same irrigation box as one of our previous swarms. I'm told that the new bees were attracted to the same location because they smelled the pheromones left by the last swarm. So, one small piece of advice would be to thoroughly wash with soap and water (pheromones are water-soluble) any area that previously held a swarm. If that isn't possible, try to screen it off. For what it's worth, I'm told that the prime swarming season is just about over, so you may get a reprieve until next spring. |
