Bees in leaf litter

| Last week I stuck my hand in some kind of wasp nest and today I disturbed a bees nest. I am jumpy as a hen at the moment. I always mulch with leaf litter, and today when digging with a pitchfork in my usual pile I must have hit a nest. I don't think the bees were too aggressive (not as bad as the wasps anyway) as I was standing in the pile swatting at what I thought were flies for a bit before I got stung. They look not too unlike honeybees. Maybe darker. Definately not yellow jackets. My question is what do I do now? The pile is large: approx. 10 X 10 feet. I don't know where the nest is. The bees have been hovering over the pile and my wheelbarrow all day. I've got two young kids and a dog which use the yard. If I stay out of the pile will the bees die or move on over the winter? How aggressive are these bees? If a stray ball lands in the pile are my kids likely to be stung? ANy advise appreciated, |

| Honeybees can be dark, depends on the race. If you leave it alone, they will probably die over the winter. They probably won't bother anyone if they are left alone. You might want to call your local extension office and get a beekeeper to come out and see if they will hive them. your kids wont' get stung unless they go in after the ball. If the ball lands in the pile, instruct your kids to leave it there until later. |
