what kind of bee is this?

Sorry, no picture. But this is what the be looks like:

It is large, at least 1 1/2 to 2 inches. The front part of the bee is orange and black stripe. The back half is also striped, but not orange (really can't tell what color it is). I've seen this type of bee here every year, usually only one bee that looks like this. I saw it for the first time 2 nights ago. It buzzes around and flies away. It doesn't land on my flowers like the other bees. It's at least three times the size of all the other bees in my yard. It also appears very shy; the other bees have no problem hanging around my flowers and garden if I am right there. This bee seems to fly away as soon as it sees me. It's also a very fast bee.

Any ideas?
