I became interested in beekeeping when I was in Iraq. I had plenty of time to study and read, read, read before returning home to start up. You have the same luxury. 'Bee season' is winding down for the year right now so you don't have to worry about actually beginning an apiary for several months. You have all the time in the world to read and prepare your equipment.

My first year cost me about $500 to get all of the equipment and packages I needed to start 2 hives. After that, it has been small purchases here and there for new packages, an extra hive top, etc for starting new/more hives. It can be expensive to begin, but your equipment will last a long time.

I first began at Beemaster's website. There are lots of how-to 'lessons' with pictures and everything. I knew how to hive a package because of his site and the forum there is also outstanding. Begin there, get some books (Beekeeping for Dummies and Keeping Bees are two of my favorites), and get ready. April comes quickly!

Join your local beekeeping club. Hook up with other beekeepers locally. That can hold your costs down in a lot of ways, and you will learn a lot. There are still some important lessons to learn this year. I'm sure you can find a beekeeper who will put you in a suit and get your hands into a bee hive. That's the best way to learn. You can start up for less than $500 that way, I bet.
