to split or not to split

Last week I checked my bees and there was plenty of honey, I thought that I would be harvesting today. I opened the hive and about a third of the capped cells were empty. There are tons of bees in the hive, I added a super to the ones that are there because I thought they needed some more room. I was wondering if they were eating the honey in preperation of swarming. I couldn't find the queen but there was plenty of brood and eggs. I didn't see any queen cells but when I took the brood boxes apart I split a bunch of comb that was built between the boxes.I don't know if there were any queens there. Any info or ideas wwould be helpful. Thanks Rich
